I thought I would just let you know our experience of amputation, something I was so worried about, something I didn't think I could bring myself to do
BUT.............
now having done the amputation on bracken if faced with another dog needed this done I would do it in a heartbeat, I can honestly say bracken never missed her leg, after amputation she still ran, jumped, swam, dug (yes unfortunately she was still a great digger, you only had to look at my garden!!!) she was running and swimming and digging up to the day we lost her, just short of her 15th birthday, she was a tripod dog for over 7 years, during that time her body changed shape, she was much more muscular on the front end and her tailed thickened out incrediably as she used it in the water as a rudder.
I was truely worried about seeing bracken after amputation, I am probably the most squemish of people just thinking about it made me feel faint, was incredably afraid of seeing her after amputation, and you know what, it was not bad at all, as soon as I saw my girl happy once again without pain, the amputation site did not matter, it was nothing, it was not gory in the slightest and healed so quickly.
